I was doing a lot of thinking after my professor had announced that a well-renowned film critic had passed away...I've read many of his criticisms, and I can tell you that he really loved film. He really understood the value of how the film medium can touch our lives on a personal level. I can say he may have been one of the most interesting people I would ever talk to considering that he not only loved film, but many forms of storytelling like comic books. Just before I heard the news in class, I was eating with a couple of friends at In-N-Out. I just kept having the urge to want to talk about life, that I felt people were taking every moment we experience for granted. We sometimes live as if we were eternal by saving up so much money, and never giving the light of day to our passions in life. Remember, one miserable day you encounter is just one of the many days compared to the ones coming ahead that will be amazing, if you allow them to be. After the grim news in class, we watched a film favorite of his The Third Man. A very compelling film indeed, I hope to write about films as passionately as Mr. Ebert as I grow and mature. (I find myself revisiting many films to discover that I have gained a different opinion on them.) It's interesting to note that Mr. Ebert also had a different opinion on film as soon as he got cancer. I still feel that films affect people on a personal level, film is just a compilation of images on the screen and it is up to the individual to give them meaning.
